What research can and cannot tell us about learning Chinese

Even if most students don’t come into contact with research into language learning directly, some still do so indirectly through newspapers, online blogs or social media (I share interesting articles and reports on Twitter, for instance). Research is sometimes also featured in mainstream newspapers and tend to generate a lot of buzz (see this article about a “new” approach to learning characters).
