The River Gambia
Helen and I were white-water neophytes. Our Gambian teammates, Abdou and Ebou, both chosen not just as old friends, but because of their decades of experience fishing from precarious pirogues in The Gambia section of the river. Within ten minutes of being on the river, I was already having doubts as Abdou stabbed frantically at the water with his paddle to control the canoe in the swift current.
