The lure of Bombay, the city of dreams

How you define an original inhabitant of Bombay or Mumbai (as the city was renamed in 1996) depends on how far back you go. My mother moved to Bombay from Ahmedabad, where she grew up, in the 1940s, when she was in her early 20s. Her mill-owner father would not let her join the family business so she found a job as an industrial psychologist (what we would now call Human Relations) in a British company in Bombay.
