Historian Caroline Ford tells the rich history of the development of a unique beach culture along Sydney's beaches, from the quaint 19th century habit of picnicking at the beach, to bikinis, surfing and suntans. Free public access to the beach is also an important story, as were the battles to stop the dumping of household and industrial garbage, as well as raw sewage along the beaches.
