Onwards Travel: an alternative to Voluntourism?
Onwards was born out of a desire to find better solutions to international aid.
Volun-tourism, handouts, and unsustainable programs have, more often than not, fallen short of true impact.
The Problem: Tourism is considered the largest transfer of resources from rich to poor, dwarfing international aid. However, tourism in many countries (such as the Dominican Republic) has not contributed to community economic development. Rather, it has concentrated wealth and accentuated poverty.
Our Solution: We at Onwards, are working to use the largest industry in the world, tourism, as a powerful tool to address global poverty. As a 501(c)3 non profit, we are providing training, microfinance services, and ultimately revenue for responsible, sustainable, local, tourism-based business.
