18-wheeler drivers must finish extensive training before obtaining their Commercial Drivers License (CDL). The criteria change from state to state, but in general, drivers must pass a written exam, acquire a learning permit, and pass a driving test. As the need for 18-wheeler truck drivers develops, companies may intentionally or unintentionally hire under-qualified drivers. Furthermore, instances of 18-wheeler driving license fraud in which trucking schools issue forged licenses may increase the number of novice drivers on the road.
