Grand hotels emerged in the nineteenth century when train travel gave the wealthy easy access to fashionable spa resorts and the great capitals of the world. The name Ritz encapsulates their essence. It was César Ritz who gave the world not only faultless service – he coined the phrase 'the customer is never wrong' - but also new standards of hotel design.
