Cuba Then and Now: A Travel Writer Looks Back

My first visit to Cuba, in December 1987, was almost surreal, raising as many questions as it answered.  I traveled to Havana via Mexico City to write a magazine story about the ninth annual International Festival of New Latin American Cinema, which celebrated socially conscious Latin American films and, in some cases, hard-edged films about Latin America made by non-Latinos.
