An architectural tour of Moscow's St Basil's Cathedral
Located next to the Kremlin in Moscow, St Basil's Cathedral is one of the most recognisable symbols of Russia. Built by Ivan the Terrible in the 1580s, the brick and wood church and its onion-like domes have survived centuries of war, fire and revolution. Buildings commissioned by despots and dictators are often statements of pride masquerading as religious piety, and the candy-coloured twirling domes of St Basil the Blessed's Cathedral in the heart of Moscow are no different.
