Travel Bloggers: Why Are You So Unhappy?

in Ask Outbounding Writing & Publishing 3671 views

I read this from Katie Aune: http://katieaune.com/im-quitting-travel-blogging-kind/  And there's a lot of disgruntled people in the comments echoing Katie's thoughts, including a few high-profile bloggers. And while a mainstay of travel blogging these days seems to be discussing why travel blogging needs to be better...well, I don't want to discuss that. I want to phrase the following questions carefully.

I want to ask travel bloggers/writers why they got into this lark in the first place. The ones that are unhappy seem to feel they've lost their way - so what was that way in the first place? There's a lot of talk of "living the dream", but for some people the "dream" isn't the one-size-fits-all destination marketing model that's emerging. (For others, it is.)

So instead of poking holes in this existing model, I want to ask travel bloggers (and travel writers with blogs, and all variations etc.)...

- why did you start this in the first place, what inspired you to do so, and what's your definition of success, or "the dream"?
- who do you ultimately want to work for?
- who do you want to be paid by (if you want to get paid at all? Some people don't want to make their travel blogging/writing commercial..)?
- and what work do you eventually want to be doing (maybe as opposed to what you *are* doing right now)?

I'd love everyone's thoughts on these questions.
